A Paver Patio Is A Must For Any Outdoor Space

You need a new patio! Having a beautiful outdoor living space is a must here in Minneapolis. Creating a space that makes it easy and comfortable to eat, grill, and relax outside is just the excuse we all need to soak up Minnesota’s warm weather with family and friends in our own backyards. Our designers have the ability to not only design a functional and cost effective patio space, but also create a complete outdoor environment with plantings, pergolas, outdoor lighting, and more.

Let us show you what your outdoor room or living space filled with flowering plants, screen plantings to block the neighbors, and all of the little details that make your space special will look like.  It’s as easy as giving us a call or filling out a quote request. One of our University of Minnesota educated designers will meet with you for free!  The process is easy, very informative, and completely stress free. We want to help give you an outdoor living space you’ll love and educate you with information about great landscape design, not just sell you a patio.

The Paver Patio Process with KG Landscape

Designing Your Paver Patio Space

The first step in obtaining the patio that works for you is meeting with our designers. They will work with you to learn the needs and wants you have for your dream outdoor space. Our designers will come up with 3-5 designs with different features and shapes to accomplish what you want. Working together, you’ll work down to the final design that works best for you.

At this point, you can begin discussing types of stones and pattern layouts. You can also add in plantings, outdoor lighting, a pergola, or any other features that will help make your space more relaxing, functional, and beautiful.

Construction of Your Paver Patio

After the final design is agreed upon, our team of landscape experts will be out at your property to start construction. We’ll dig out about 12″ of dirt and put down a solid base of class 5 and sand. This is incredibly important for the stones to stay in place and stable for many years to come. Next, our team will start laying down the stones. We might also add in outdoor lighting, drainage, or a pergola at this stage as well, depending on your design.

The stones will be cut to fit the shape of the patio and snap edging will be installed around the outside to keep the stones in place. Finally, we’ll put down a layer of polymeric sand which solidifies as a final protection against moving pavers and weeds.

Warm Up Your Summer Nights With A Fire Pit

Built Into Patio

A fire pit that is built into the paver patio can easily be the highlight feature. This is the dream that many people think of when they want a patio. These are the fire pits you see a lot on Pinterest and Houzz. One thing to keep in mind, is to make sure you follow your city ordinances and have the fire pit far enough away from your house. This is a common mistake that many homeowners make.

They can be built out of a wide variety of materials including free standing wall stone, natural stone, and boulders. When building a fire pit, you would want to make sure you dig out the base material for the patio and secure the edges of the patio. Using a steel ring (from any landscape supply store) helps keep you and your patio safe.

Natural Stone

Fire pits can be built out of manufactured stone as you see in the above example. However, they can also be constructed out of natural stone boulders. Building them out of this material is simply a matter of personal preference.

Is your style more formal or informal? Do you like natural elements to you decorating or prefer order? These are the types of questions you would want to ask. Budget plays a factor as well, boulders will be a little cheaper but also won’t give the same sort of height.

Mobile

These fire pits aren’t as sexy as the built in ones but they are definitely still a worthwhile option. You can still have friends over and roast marshmallows and enjoy being outside.
We often suggest these mobile fire pits to clients for a variety of reasons. First, there are ordinances about where fire pits can be so sometimes a permanent fire pit just isn’t feasible where the patio will be. Second, a mobile fire pit is less expensive than a permanent one so if we’re trying to cut costs, this is a good option. Third, many people don’t know about these types of fire pits, so we like to educate our clients on all their options.

Fire Table

These tables are basically a propane grill but for entertaining and looks, instead of cooking. These tables come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, designs, etc. A fire table adds so much ambiance and mood to a dinner. They’re incredible easy to set up, start up, and there is literally no clean up with them. No ashes to shovel out, no wood to chop, nothing. Another great option to add to a stone patio.

Patio Seating

Sitting Wall/Columns

These are built using concrete formed blocks. They come in an incredibly wide variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. You can see some examples on our Pinterest board.

Boulders

As a less expensive seating option, boulders can be absolutely fantastic. They’re easy to take care (like a pet rock) and add to the natural look of the landscape. They’re relatively inexpensive in comparison to using formed stone or other materials. They come in a wide variety of colors and shapes.

Logs

These natural elements can be harvested and hand picked to be comfortable to sit on and look gorgeous. You can prevent those nasty splinters by sanding and/or sealing the logs. Otherwise, if a log is sat on enough, it’ll smooth out.
