Case Study

Crooner’s Supper Club and Lounge was bought by one of our major landscape maintenance partners in 2014. That summer, we helped renovate the plant beds and grass areas around the property to get it up to snuff. We work with many different commercial vendors to design and improve their landscapes. However, the patio area of the restaurant was definitely underutilized. The old patio was very uneven with a step down that led to many dangerous customer and waiter movements. The wood wall that surrounded the patio previously was basically a half wall and that had a very drab color. It was obvious that a renovation was in order.

Our lead designer, Kent Gliadon, and the restaurant management team at Crooner’s spent a long time working on the design for this project. Many different patio stone types were discussed and different sizes of patios and different shapes. It was a long process drilling down to the materials and design that everyone felt comfortable with. There were also a lot of logistics involved in the patio including umbrellas, overhead lighting, a cedar fence, and a metal fence surrounding the patio. There were also different ordinances that had to be kept in mind like green space and adult beverage rules.

Thanks to all the time spent designing, lining up, and communicating, the project actually went very smoothly. James, our lead landscape foreman, did a fantastic job laying every single block in the patio. The orchestration of patio stone arriving and digging out the old patio and putting in tons (literally) of base material was incredibly smooth. Even through changes on the fly, the patio just kept growing. It was incredible to see the final pieces like the metal and cedar fences get installed to be the cherry on top of our beautiful patio. The management team at Crooner’s did a fantastic job picking out umbrellas, tables, and chairs that compliment the patio and the building itself. We will be coming to Crooner’s Supper Club and Lounge to see our work for years to come.

Materials: Paver patio using Anchor Charleston paver stone.

Notes from construction: This was (and still is) our biggest patio project ever at our company. The final patio was about 1500 sq. ft. The experience of working at a restaurant and building something that thousands of people will see and use and walk on was a very challenging, and proud moment for our team. We take great care with every project but the public nature of this one was especially on our minds. Another first for us was the planter box with the tree in the middle of the patio. One of our designers built that in his garage and then we had to carry it over the patio with 8 guys.
