The Benefits of Outdoor Landscaping: Why It's More Than Just a Beautiful Yard

When you purchase your home, doing everything you can to make it feel like your space inside is usually on most people's minds. Your yard is an extension of your home, so diving into landscaping can solidify that your home is uniquely yours.

While landscaping is tedious and can be pricey when hiring someone to help you, the benefits are immense. Check out these benefits of outdoor landscaping and why it's more than just a beautiful yard.

Landscaping is Environmentally Friendly

Routine lawn care typically uses harsh chemicals that can actually be bad for the environment, no matter how beautiful your yard looks. Proper outdoor landscaping can be beneficial for the environment.

A good landscaper will ensure you're planting flowers, shrubs, and trees that are made to thrive in your climate. Doing this will encourage natural growth, which eliminates the need for harsh chemicals and unnatural fertilizers.

Besides chemicals, good landscaping can be a buffer for erosion and runoff, which can help prevent pollutants from getting into the water supply. The best thing you can do to ensure you're keeping your beautiful yard environmentally friendly is to talk with a professional who knows your area and what plants are going to be the best for your yard and environment.

It Increases Happiness and Lowers Stress

Did you know that a beautifully landscaped yard can increase your happiness and reduce stress? Even if you don't enjoy planting and taking care of plants, being surrounded by flowers, shrubs, and pretty trees can naturally improve your mental health.

Some people go as far as to say that landscaping is a natural antidepressant, but that might be a stretch. Some studies show how a beautiful yard can improve mental health. While it can't eliminate mental health issues, it can help
improve symptoms of anxiety and depression in some people.

Even if you don't have anxiety or depression, the natural calming effects of landscaping can help lower your stress levels and help you live a happier life. Spending a few moments outside a day or just looking outside at your beautiful yard can boost your happiness.

Strategic Landscaping Can Lower Energy Bills

Even if money is no object for you, no one wants to overpay for their home's energy bills. Landscaping is a cost-effective way to help lower your energy bills. Hiring a professional to help strategically place trees and other plants can make your home more energy efficient.

Proper plant placement can help keep your house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer without causing your bills to rise too drastically. Landscapers can use plants to shield windows during the hottest part of the day and prevent direct sunlight from entering your home, causing your HVAC system to work overtime.

The goals of landscaping to lower energy bills are to maximize shade in warm months and keep your home warmer in the winter by preventing your home from freezing winds. A well-landscaped yard can reduce your
energy bills by around 25%

A Beautiful Yard Encourages Outdoor Time

When you have a beautiful yard that you're proud of, it encourages you to spend more time outside. You'll look out your window and see the beauty and have a natural draw to spend time outside, whether playing games, reading a book, or simply sitting there taking it all in.

Keeping up with the landscaping can ensure you spend more time outside than inside. When the grass is brown and dying, and plants look drab, it can make you want to avoid being in your yard.

Keeping the yard in excellent condition could be a wonderful hobby for those who love gardening! You'll be able to spend more time outside weeding plants, watering, and planting flowers and other plants you want to take care of. It can even become a family affair if you want it to be!

It's a Great Investment

This benefit of landscaping your yard might be the most obvious one depending on who you ask, but it's a significant investment. Beautiful landscaping is a good short-term investment, but it's perfect if you're looking to make a long-term investment in your property.

Having beautiful flowers, trees, shrubs, and other plants can be a great short-term investment, potentially long, as long as they're maintained well. But landscaping is more than just beautiful plants.

Investing in more permanent landscaping or hardscaping can increase your
curb appeal and your home's value if you ever decide to refinance your mortgage or sell. You can add outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, a deck, a stone patio, and more. Gathering patio furniture that fits your aesthetic can be a fun adventure and make you settle in more to your home.

Landscaping is an excellent financial investment, but it'll also be an investment in your family. You'll have an extra space to host family gatherings, eat dinner, and spend time with one another.

Landscaping Can Provide Privacy

Depending on your situation, suitable landscaping can provide you with some privacy and protection from nosey neighbors and those walking by. You can address these concerns with your landscaper, and they can assess your yard for including privacy screens and strategically placed shrubs that provide a "natural" fence.

You can think about adding shrubs and other plants around the perimeter of your home, like a fence, or just in specific areas near windows to ensure that people can't see your home too easily from the sidewalk.
Besides creating more privacy for your family, they can even protect you and your home from the weather in some cases. Certain shrubs and other landscaping options can serve as a windshield, protecting your windows and structure from potential damage.

Final Thoughts

Landscaping your yard brings several benefits besides beauty. Having an outdoor space you're proud of can encourage you to get outside more, bring happiness, boost your home's value, and much more. Hiring a professional outdoor landscaping company can be the best thing to ever happen to your home.

The legendary architect Louis Sullivan coined a phrase that has driven architecture and design ever since: "form follows function." While aesthetics are critical to buildings and landscapes alike, that physical beauty must always remain secondary to the fundamentals of good design. In Shoreview, Minnesota, just outside St. Paul , we encountered a landscape where, unfortunately, function followed form. Here, the realities and principles of effective drainage were downstream of their original builder's aesthetic choices. That meant water from snowmelt and rainfall was streaming into parts of the lawn where it wasn't meant to be. The standing water that had been allowed to collect in the back and side yards was putting a considerable amount of the property out of play. In order to reclaim usable space and rethink the way the land handled water, this Shoreview homeowner entrusted KG Landscape with identifying key issues, presenting potential solutions, and doing the necessary work the client decided upon to restore their lawn.

On the shores of Lake Minnetonka, perhaps the most famous of Minnesota's 10,000 lakes, an Orono, Minnesota homeowner was struggling with a back yard that was becoming more marsh than yard. The yard was a scenic one. The back porch opened up to the top of a small hill, which rolled down toward the lakefront and the boathouse. This flat space between the hill and the water would be ideal for backyard barbecues, some low-stakes games of bocce and badminton, or simply a spot to lay down a towel and get some summer reading done. Instead, this area was too waterlogged to enjoy. The runoff from the hilltop combined with unfavorable soil composition were limiting the use of the yard, closing off space while even diminishing the quality of the turf. How would this homeowner be able to reclaim this unusable land without disrupting the Lake Minnetonka shoreline that made the property so attractive? To find a solution, they turned to KG Landscape.
